Important Note to Parents

Greetings Parents and Family Members,

This note is to share a different approach to how our staff will communicate progress with families for this first semester.  Historically, we have offered two nights of in-person conferences but that is not enough time to meet with each family to share progress so we are trying a different approach this year.

In the next few weeks all staff will be reaching out personally to each family to share student progress.  This communication may come in the form of an email, a phone call, a postcard, or an in-person discussion.  Please make sure to answer any phone calls, emails, or texts if you see our school phone number displayed as you will be contacted by multiple teachers to share your child’s progress.

Thank you for letting us try a different approach to share and communicate about your child and increase communication efforts with families.

Sincerely,
Sarah Poquette

Successful Socktober

Thank you!

Here is a word from our 4-5 grade class:

"This month of October, the 4-5 grade ALPs teen life students organized a sock drive for the warming shelter, also known as Socktober. Through the month of October students were able to drop off socks at Ms. Torine’s room. In return, 4-5 grade ALPs students would reward them with a raffle ticket. The raffle items were, a basketball, won by Rose Meyer from 7th grade (Tipler), a water bottle, won by Addison McCabe from 8th grade (ALPs), and rope lights, won by Kenzie Brennand from 8th grade (Tipler). There was also a staff raffle box, for staff members only.  This was won by Mrs. Horn. This teacher teaches at ALPs. At the start of Socktober we set a goal for 500 pairs of socks. We beat this goal and kept going. Our grand total was 609 pairs of socks! We will donate them all to the Day by Day Warming Shelter, to keep people warm as winter sets in. All in all, we believe that Socktober was completely successful!"

OASD Middle Schools Move to Proficiency Scoring

The purpose of these communications and resources has been to help parents adjust to our new progress reporting system. The grades you see in Infinite Campus will look very different this year.  Parents will need to become a Canvas observer if they want to see the details into the proficiency score they see in Canvas and Infinite Campus.

Becoming a Canvas Parent Observer: How do I set up a Canvas parent account?
Now that middle schools have moved to proficiency scoring, parents will want to see inside Canvas to get a gauge on how students are doing in their classes.  Parents could also ask their child to show them their grades from their Chromebook as well since the view for parents is almost exactly the same, except for the homework submissions. This Proficiency Scoring and Grading in Canvas video will show parents how to navigate Canvas as well as explain proficiency scoring  once they become parent observers.
